Time. It's a funny thing. And what if you are lead to believe that you are crazy all of your life because you see dead people. But, what if it's because you somehow have a connection to the past? Myra McEntire makes your brain hurt. What if one event could change everything? But, you are allowed to change too much? Emerson has been through a lot. I mean, at one of her brother's events she saw a whole jazz trio playing around a piano. That no one else saw, and that was expected because they weren't really there, right? But, Michael did. And then he crashed her world. Nothing made sense anymore. Except Michael, of course. Physics crashed with stretches and some philosophy. Untapped potential in a romance. Mixed strings of purpose and maybe fate. What is really set in stone?

Margaret Peterson Haddix **** (5 stars!) I was looking for books on pirates for my friend and saw this. I've other fabulous books by Mrs. Haddix and thought, "If she wrote this!" When I looked into it looked amazing! And it was. This is a book I will not forget. Told from 3 very different, yet similar, teenage girls. Jane, a rich and fluffed up, Bella a forgenior from a poor town in Italy and Yetta a poor girl from Russia. How do they meet? Who might live? The tale of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory is a tragic but unbelievable true story. All the girls lose their families. Yetta and Bella are working, less than $4 a week and have trouble understanding the culture and language of the strange city of New York. They live through strikes and women's suffrage movements, harsh winters and hot summers. Coming together in a beautiful and fist clenching way I was left thinking for days about this story. It has some hard ideas it. If I you're sexist or even raciest I don't recommend this novel, or maybe I do? Will it make you even think about thinking differently? Strong middle school readers through high school-ers, boy and girls I'd pick this one up next time you stop by the library. It is historical fiction (not everything is true -read acknowledgements-) and a sad topic. But isn't life, sometimes? She'd realized that that was what she'd been doing her entire life. Her father died, and Bella went to America. Pietro vanished, and she started working two jobs. Her mother and siblings died, she joined the strike. The strike ended, and she and Yetta helped Jane. On and on and on it went; she'd had to climb back from one tradegy or setback after another. That was life. ^^ I realize that seemed long. But I felt you need to read all of it to get the full effect. You may not understand, just how well it connects, how much it means. But if you read the book, you will.
Pam Muñoz ryan4 stars I get so mad at the way they treated her, the only girl. Her only friends being sweet big eared Hayward and horse loving Vern the horse keeper at the orphanage. But she was tough and determined. She would not be kept as a kitchen maid. The only choice was to run away, to get a chance to do the only thing she loves was to pretend to be a man. Even if she survived running away; no one questions a young boy walking around. Riding horse, working for them, driving them. Will she come close enough to her dream to grab it? This book is pretty short in pages but long in love and hislory. this bittersweet tale is a true one. It has a few drawings but still readable big kids. I say good 4th-lazy 8th graders should read this book. This author has written many (read two) other books that are so amazing you should consider reading them. ;) Also many for young children (that I don't think have been read by me).
Caroline B. CooneyI am a century changer, she thought. I have visited both sides of time. People think they own time. They have watches and clocks and digital pulses. But they are wrong. Time owns them. I am a property of Time, just as Harriet will be property of her husband. ^^ exterpt from Both Sides of Time (end of page 147 and beginning of 148) ^^^ 4 stars I've been reading a lot of good books lately, that's why I am putting all the 4 stars out there. It's hard to get a 5 from me, that demands a sort of perfection. This book was amazing on so many levels. It had the time traveling, which is just plain cool. And you got to see some history from two centuries (1995 and 1885). Also the fact that in mostly the past men can be awful. They think they own everything, especially the women, they are just property. Annie sees this with her own father in the "present". She thinks she's ruining peoples lives on both sides of time. And she does. But I think she ends up making it better too. She opens up some opportunities that were never opened before. I think this is a 5th-8th grade kind of book. It has an interesting point of view scheme. A bit difficult if you don't like skipping around to different people and third person. Also really interesting. You can always try reading it... if you don't like it... stop. It's not a life or death decision. Or is it? ****- (4 stars) This is by grace Cavendish. The time period is Queen Elizabeth I in England. The girl is Maid of Honor to the Queen. Her name is Grace and she's 13. Both her parents have died and she was 'taken in" by the Queen. She has to choose a man (out of three the Queen has chosen) to marry when she comes of age. One is her friend, but hes old and fat. One is handsome, but rude and mean. One is young and handsome, but he is poor and doesn't talk. She chooses the last one. Why do you think it tittled 'Assaasin'? Guess, there is(are) murder(s)! And Lady Grace is the one to find the truth. I recommend this for middle school students, people who like olden timey books. ***** (5 stars!!) "Sea-weed brain!" "Holy gods..." "Ella likes books!" This is what I call action packed comedy! The Percey Jackson series (The Lightning Thief, Sea of Monsters, The Titan Curse,, Battle of the Labyrinth and the Last Olympian)is by Rick Riordan, by far the best writer of all time!!!!!!! It's about these demi gods (Percey and Annabeth with the help from Camp Half-Blood and the Hunters) who have to go on quests and finally defeat the all mighty Kronus, the god of time. Not even a god, titan, father of the titans. I recomend this book for 4th through 8th graders. But really it canbe for anyone! If you like fantasy, greek gods or awesome, descriptive writing. You love this! It's like modern, but theres the whole ancient gods thing. SO GOOD!!! PS. this is not a review or even a recommendation: THIS IS A MUST DO!!!! PPS. Above Rick Riordan's name is pink. It is a link to his awesome website! |
